A Frederick man has admitted that he was under the influence of alcohol when he ran a stop light at Buckeystown Pike and Lily Pons Road, striking another vehicle. Cole Hallyburton, 20, admitted that his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit at the time of the accident. A passenger in his truck, 20-year-old Luke Bartlett, was killed in the crash. Hallyburton pled guilty to negligent vehicular manslaughter. He was ordered to serve 18 months in jail, six months of home detention after his release, 100 hours of community service, and to continue to participate in substance abuse treatment.

Though the initial sentence handed down was an 8 and a half year prison term, the judge in the case suspended all but 18 months, noting that the defendant was a law-abiding citizen in all other respects. He admonished Hallyburton that he would re-impose the full sentence if Hallyburton violated his probation by using alcohol.

Thirteen Arrested in Prostitution Sting

Howard County law enforcement officers conducted a sting at a hotel in Jessup last month, leading to the arrest of 13 men, all charged with prostitution-related offenses. A spokesperson said the sting involved the placement of a fake ad on the website Backpage, which is a popular website for men seeking prostitutes. As men called in, they were allowed to talk to undercover female officers, who arranged a meeting at the hotel. When the men arrived at the room, they were placed under arrest.

According to police, it’s part of an ongoing program designed to end human trafficking in Howard County. A similar undercover effort nabbed eight men at a hotel in North Laurel in early February.

A Columbia man and a Huntingtown resident died after being shot by a homeowner in the 7600 block of Sandy Farm Road in Severn in early July. Duwayne Mason, of Columbia, and Timothy John Kerr, of Huntingtown, both died of wounds from a shotgun fired by homeowner John Matthew Garrison.

According to initial reports, Garrison claimed that he saw the two men approaching his house wearing masks and thought they were armed. He told police that he went in his house, got his gun and warned the two that he would shoot if they tried to enter. When Mason and Kerr attempted to kick down the front door, Garrison opened fire, striking both men. Kerr died in his vehicle while trying to leave the scene and Mason died in a home down the street, where he had gone to seek help.

In a search of Garrison’s home following the incident, police found nearly 200 grams of cocaine, a quantity of amphetamines, a digital scale and more than $6,000 in cash. Garrison was arrested on drug charges.

Police have arrested and charged a 46-year-old Laurel man with human trafficking involving two girls aged 13 and 15. Arthur Coleman has been also cited for prostitution, sexual solicitation of a minor, sexual abuse of a minor and attempted second degree sexual assault. Police busted Coleman after tracking him through an online advertisement.

Officers say they set up a sting with a female detective posing as a young girl. The detective contacted the 13-year-old, saying that she wanted to make money with her, and arranged to meet her and an older man in Columbia, Maryland. When they met, both the 13 and the 15-year-old girl were in the car with Coleman. After police took Coleman into custody, a search of his vehicle produced condoms, cash and a number of cell phones. Police also say they have evidence that Coleman rented hotel rooms in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC, using them as liaisons for the young girls to have sex for money.

Woman Charged as Accessory in Shooting Gets Probation

woman-charged-as-accessory-in-shooting-gets-probation

A Severn woman has been sentenced to serve a period of probation for her involvement in an incident where an Anne Arundel County police officer was shot. Danielle Blake, 30, was initially sentenced to serve eight years in prison for her participation in the events following the shooting. The officer who was shot, Corporal Larry Adams, testified in court that he forgave Blake for her role in the shooting and asked the court not to make her serve any more time in jail. The judge suspended the prison sentence.

According to court records, Blake was in a vehicle with Colvin White, of Annapolis, on April 10, 2015. White had gone to a nearby 7-Eleven to get gas when Corporal Adams approached the vehicle. The officer then went to the 7-Eleven in response to a report of a suspicious person (White). He then chased White into a nearby wooded area, where White shot him twice. White then fled in the van with Blake.

Adams told the court that, in his opinion, Blake had no intention of committing an illegal act that day, and did not initially know that White had shot him.

Former Howard County School Teacher Sentenced for Sexual Assault of Boy

sexual-assault-of-boy

A former Howard County school teacher was sentenced to five years in jail after luring a 14-year-old boy out of his bedroom at night by misrepresenting himself as a 16-year-old. The teacher, who worked as a technology teacher and as a coach in the Howard County School system since 2003, pled not guilty last year to a third-degree sexual offense. Prosecutors say he went on a teen dating website, posted false pictures and misrepresented his age. They say that he lured the 14-year-old out of his home to meet him on a local tennis court in July, 2014. The boy subsequently reported the teacher to the police, who conducted an investigation that led to his arrest the following December.

After the teacher was convicted, his attorney asked that his sentence be suspended, but the judge only suspended four of the five years, and placed him on five years of supervised probation.

Employees of the hotel, which has thus far not been named, apparently called police on Monday after seeing traffic in and out of one of the rooms. When police arrived, they found Munroe and the young woman in the room. Monroe was also charged with disorderly conduct. Drunk Driver Sentenced to Three Years for Injuring Police Officer

injuring-police

A Maryland man has been sentenced to three years in prison after he struck a police officer with his car while driving under the influence of alcohol. Lennwood Saunders, 35, was driving a Chevy Tahoe on October 21, 2015, when he “felt something.” Shortly thereafter, he was pulled over by Montgomery County police officer Michael Murphy, who after asking for his license, informed Saunders that what he “felt” was his side-view mirror striking the officer in the rib cage. Murphy suffered a broken rib, but was able to run to his vehicle and chase Saunders down. Officials say the severity of the sentence stems from the fact that Saunders has multiple DUI convictions and the fact that he nearly killed the officer.
