Police Seize Marijuana with Street Value of $1.45 Million

marijuana-2
Maryland State Police, in conjunction with the Queen Anne’s County Drug Task Force and the Kent County Narcotics Task Force, busted a marijuana cultivation operation in August that led to the seizure of plants with an estimated street value of nearly one and a half million dollars. The 15-acre property, located near Chesterville Bridge Road in Chesterville and Kent, has apparently been abandoned for a number of years. The owners, who live in Delaware, are reported to visit the property only occasionally and are not suspected of being involved in the operation.

Law enforcement officials say they became suspicious of illegal drug activity there and conducted surveillance for several days, but did not observe any activity on the property or any traffic in or out of the property. In late August, after obtaining a search warrant, officers went into the home, which had been covered with plywood. Inside, they discovered a seedling area, where marijuana plants were started before transfer outside. They also found processed marijuana, large plastic bags, a heat sealer and some personal items belonging to one of the suspects.

Outside, officers found more than 714 adult marijuana plants, some nearly 10 feet tall. The plots all had irrigation and fertilization systems in place. A pit bull was chained near the entrance to the fields. The dog has since been adopted.

Gunman in Armed Robbery of Columbia Cab Driver to Serve Five Years

crime_scene
A Columbia, Maryland, man who appears to have participated in an armed robbery of a taxi driver last spring was sentenced to five years in prison.*

The man in question is just 20 years old. He was the last of four Columbia young men, each of them teenagers at the time of the incident, who participated in the crime to be sentenced. All of them have pleaded guilty.

Judge Richard S. Bernhardt of the Howard County Circuit Court sentenced the man after the accused submitted a guilty plea for armed robbery and conspiracy charges relating to the actual event. It appears that the man in question got into the cab on March 1st at Sweet Fern, heading to Sewells Orchard. As they drove, one teen began to choke the driver. The passenger in the front seat then said, “I’m going to kill you.”

The driver accelerated and rammed a tree. The airbags deployed and the driver ran away during the distraction.
Police arrived and found a yellow karate belt and a black BB gun. They used cell phone data to link the teens to the crime.

The other teens’ sentences ranged from 18 months in jail to a suspended sentence with five years’ probation. Additionally, the young men must repay the cab driver $4,187.02 in restitution.

Driving with Suspended License in Maryland

Driving with Suspended License is Serious
In Maryland, a driver’s license can be suspended for many reasons. Often it is caused by a mistake, or an oversight, but it can lead to serious consequences. Some of the reasons the Maryland MVA will suspend a driver’s license:

  • Failing to pay a traffic ticket.
  • Failing to pay a fine after appearing in traffic court.
  • Failing to appear in court for a traffic ticket.
  • Moving to a new address and not notifying the MVA, and then not receiving a notice to appear in court for a traffic ticket.
  • Receiving too many points (MVA can suspend a driver’s license for an accumulation of 8  points or more).
  • Being convicted of DWI/DUI, driving under the influence, or driving while impaired.

Many people charged with driving with suspended licence in Maryland are not criminals; they make a mistake, or fail to take care of a traffic ticket through an oversight.

What are the Penalties for Driving With Suspended License?

The penalties for driving with suspended license in Maryland are serious. They range from 2 months in jail, a $500.00 fine, or both, to one year in jail, a $1,000.00 fine, or both — depending upon the reason the license was suspended. Also, a conviction can range from 3 points to 12 points — enough to revoke your driver’s license.

What to Know When Arrested for Shoplifting Charges

Shoplifting Charges are Serious

Under Maryland law, a person accused of shoplifting will be charged with theft. Theft is considered a “crime of moral turpitude,” or one reflecting dishonesty or lack of trustworthiness. Here are some of the consequences of a theft conviction:

  • Employment. Many employers, particularly large companies, financial institutions, law enforcement agencies, and government contractors, conduct background checks on applicants. A theft conviction for shoplifting charges can disqualify for employment, or be cause for dismissal.
  • Security Clearances. The federal government’s Questionnaire for National Security Positions (Standard Form 86) requests detailed information about a criminal or police record. A conviction for shoplifting charges would have to be disclosed.
  • College Admission. Many applications for colleges and universities contain questions regarding any criminal record, including the Common Application for Undergraduate College Admissions.
  • Military Service. A conviction in a civilian court for theft, including shoplifting charges, may be cause for separation from military service.

Punishment for Shoplifting Charges in Maryland

The penalty for shoplifting charges in Maryland depends upon the value of the item(s) that were stolen:

  • If the value of the property stolen is less than $1,000.00, it is a misdemeanor, and the maximum penalty is 18 months imprisonment and/or a $500.00 fine. In addition, the offender must restore the item or its value.
  • If the value is less than $100.00, it is a misdemeanor, and the maximum penalty is 90 days imprisonment, and/or a $500.00 fine. In addition, the offender must restore the item or its value.
  • If the value is at least $1,000.00, but less than $10,000.00, it is a felony, and the maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment and/or a $10,000.00 fine.

Shoplifting Charges and Penalties in Maryland

Arrested for Shoplifting Charges in Maryland?

Shoplifting charges in Maryland are very serious. A conviction can result in a criminal record, and even jail. An impulsive act, often involving shoplifting of items of small value, can cause consequences that cost much more. It’s simply not worth it.

What is Shoplifting in Maryland?

Shoplifting is considered “theft” in Maryland. If someone leaves a store without paying for an item, that obviously is shoplifting, or theft. But many people don’t realize that if someone conceals an item, for example by placing it in a shopping bag, even though they don’t leave the store, it is still considered theft and they will face shoplifting charges.

Punishment for Shoplifting Charges in Maryland

The penalty for shoplifting in Maryland depends upon the value of the item(s) that were stolen. If the value of the property stolen is less than $1,000.00, it is a misdemeanor, and the maximum penalty is 18 months imprisonment and/or a $500.00 fine. In addition, the offender must restore the item or its value. If the value is less than $100.00, it is a misdemeanor, and the maximum penalty is 90 days imprisonment, and/or a $500.00 fine. In addition, the offender must restore the item or its value. If the value is at least $1,000.00, but less than $10,000.00, it is a felony, and the maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment and/or a $10,000.00 fine.

Arson Suspect Arrested in New Carrollton Fire

Arson Charges filed in Deadly New Carrollton Fire

Prince George’s County Police have identified a suspect in an apartment fire in New Carrollton in January, 2013, that left two people dead. Officers have arrested 44-year-old Anthony Andre Allain and charged him with two counts of felony murder, as well as first-degree arson. According to a witness, the defendant barricaded himself and two others in an apartment at 7600 Fountainbleau around 7:30 pm on January 13, and started a fire. Allain escaped with burns that were not life threatening, but the other two adults perished, one inside the apartment and the other after leaping from a balcony.

Under Maryland law, if you commit a felony and someone dies as a result of that act, you can be charged with felony murder. Because Allain is charged with the felony of arson, he has also been charged with felony murder. The penalty for conviction for felony murder can include life in prison.

What is Arson under Maryland Law?

Arson in Maryland is divided into degrees: first degree arson and second degree arson. What is first degree arson in Maryland? First degree arson is when a person willfully and maliciously sets fire to or burns (1) a dwelling, or (2) a structure in which or on which an individual who is not a participant is present. First degree arson is a felony. What is the penalty for first degree arson? A person who is guilty of first degree arson in Maryland is subject to imprisonment not exceeding 30 years, or a fine not exceeding $50,000.00, or both.

What is second degree arson in Maryland? Second degree arson is when a person willfully and maliciously sets fire to or burns a structure that belongs to the person or another. Second degree arson is a felony. What is the penalty for second degree arson? A person who is guilty of second degree arson in Maryland is subject to imprisonment not exceeding 20 years, or a fine not exceeding $30,000.00, or both.
