Hanover is contending not only with the gambling issues the Maryland Live! Casino raises, but also with thieves attracted to the place where money flows freely and people may not always be paying close attention to their pocketbooks and wallets.*
Recently, two men were arrested for what police called a brazen robbery at Maryland’s biggest casino. Around 8 a.m., a man who was sleeping in his car inside the casino’s parking garage awoke to noise near his vehicle. When he left the car to investigate, two men approached him; one had a knife. They demanded property and threatened him with the knife against his neck, said Anne Arundel County Police Lieutenant T. J. Smith.
However, the two thieves weren’t prepared for the dozens of security cameras that took pictures of them from many different angles. Cops tracked the two down soon after they left the scene.
There was also another robbery at the casino in July, and another one back in January. During the January robbery, a man, age 32, attempted to steal a 71-year-old woman’s purse, using a knife as she was entering an elevator. He did not succeed.
A bit later, the man struck again. This time, his victim was a 35-year-old woman who was inside her car in the casino’s parking garage. The suspect evidently approached her with the knife and stole money from her. In both cases, the women were not injured.
The alleged thief was identified through the surveillance system at the casino, witnesses on the scene and casino security.
Maryland Live! Casino issued a statement that said, in part: “We have highly sophisticated resources at our disposal, as well as a substantial security force that make it nearly impossible for anyone to perpetrate a crime on our property and get away with it.”
